PSALM 13 The Agony of Abandonment

V. 1 “How long, O LORD? Will you forget me forever?”
It is deeply saddening how many individuals endure severe loneliness, even when surrounded by friends, family, or a church community. However, feeling entirely abandoned is an even deeper form of suffering. Many are familiar with tragic stories of children, hostages, or prisoners of war left behind in isolation, wondering if help will ever come. You might relate to that overwhelming sense of hopelessness.
This feeling of abandonment forms the core of David’s grief in Psalm 13. In the opening verse, he cries out, asking how long the LORD will forget him, and whether it will last forever. David was hurting, exposed, disheartened, and fearful. Such an experience is terrifying. Abandonment is uniquely painful because it involves a breach of trust in a meaningful relationship—where love and care are expected, yet David fears God has rejected him.
Have you ever experienced this level of distress? Perhaps you have faced severe hardships that left you struggling to cope. In this life, human help often falls short, and even loved ones can fail us. Yet, feeling forsaken by God is the most profound agony, because without Him, true hope is lost.
By the conclusion of the psalm, however, David’s cry transforms from grief into praise. How does this shift occur? In verse 5, he affirms his trust in God’s steadfast love. That trust is the turning point. God’s promise of love sustained David even in his deepest pain. Placing trust in God required faith, which is the same call given to us today. Unlike David, we have the ultimate demonstration of God’s unshakeable love through the suffering and death of Jesus Christ. No one deserved God’s continual care more than His eternal Son, yet Jesus experienced the absolute horror of abandonment on the cross, crying out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matt. 27:46). He was forsaken so that we would never have to be.
At times, it can be difficult to perceive how God is caring for us, and like David, we may feel abandoned. Yet through faith, we can rest in God’s love and cling to His precious promises. In Christ, He assures us, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Heb. 13:5).
