PSALM 33:1-9 Word of Power

PSALM 33:1-9

V. 6 "By the word of the LORD the heavens were made."

Are you in a position to command others? Can you get your dog to sit

or do tricks? Maybe you are a parent or a teacher—what is the most

you dare to ask of your kids? Bosses and managers at work can give orders

and employees follow them. Governors, presidents, and prime ministers are

perhaps the most powerful people in the world, able to command police

forces, armies, and navies to do their bidding. When some people give a

command, those around them jump to obey!

But can anyone command something to simply pop into existence? Take

your wildest invention, your most genius idea, and command it to appear.

What happens? Nothing, of course! But it's different with the LORD our

God. "By the word of the LORD the heavens were made." The psalmist is so

amazed by this ability he repeats it in verse 9, "For he spoke, and it came to

be; he commanded, and it stood firm."

Is that not incredible? All God has to do is speak his wish and instantly

it comes about. And this God is your God. That's one reason the psalmist is

filled with joyful praise—my God can do anything! His power to help me

is unlimited and his commitment to help me is unshakable, for God also

spoke a word of promise in his covenant. The only thing equal to the power

of the LORD's word is the faithfulness of his word, as verse 4 says, "For the

word of the LORD is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness."

Put this together and it means you and I have the best reasons to trust our

God: his unparalleled power and unflailing commitment. See how he proved

this in sending his Son, the Word, to take on human nature and take away

our sin (John 1:14-18). Jesus, the Word, helped create the universe but, to

save us from our guilt, willingly became a suffering servant even to the point

of death on a cross. What love! What faithfulness! And on the third day he

arose from the dead—what power!

Your God knows you have everyday needs. Through the Word, he's already

taken care of your biggest, eternal need. How much more, then, won't he

provide what you need to serve him today. He only needs to speak a word,

and it will be done.
