PSALM 2:1–6 Why Do the Nations Rage?

V. 1 “Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?”
After Psalm 1’s very personal word about walking in the LORD’s way we are suddenly lifted off the earth to see what way the nations are walking. And it’s not encouraging. David describes them as raging and plotting—they are angry, indignant, and ready to break away. Break away from whom? From the LORD and his Anointed King! They have no interest in meditating on God’s law but instead want to throw off its yoke, as if it’s a ball and chain.
We see this too, don’t we? Governments forbid God’s commandments in courtrooms or classrooms. Marriage is first degraded with permissive divorce laws and then redefined in perverse ways. Murder of babies in the womb is not only tolerated but supported and paid for. Instead of outlawing gambling and drug sales, governments use them to fill their own coffers. On occasion a politician may mention an undefined, harmless “God,” but you virtually never hear a leader speak of serving the LORD’s Anointed, Jesus Christ. In politics, Jesus is out.
Psalm 2 pictures the kings and peoples of the earth conspiring together against Christ. Whether they do this consciously or not, many nations end up on the same side, doing the same sorts of things, always pulling away from King Jesus. “The enemy of my enemy is my friend,” they say.
Where does that leave us, the simple people of God? We’re just the “little guy” in this picture—how can we compete with presidents, parliaments, senates, and supreme courts? What’s going to happen to Christians as the world powers push back against the Christ?
That’s a natural question, based on what we see. But faith asks a different question, based on what is promised: why do the nations rage and plot? Their rebellion is in the end useless, for they cannot win! David recalls God’s promise to give him an everlasting kingdom that will spread over the whole world and be ruled by an everlasting king from his line, and the nations don’t stand a chance rebelling against him!
Jesus Christ is that great Son, and every governing official should think twice about how he responds. For Christ loves and protects the “little guy” who loves and serves him. World powers may roar and even bite but King Jesus rules supreme, and at the end of history you will find yourself safe with him.
