Morning Story: Jesus calms the storm

V. 5 “I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the LORD sustained me.”
Maybe you’ve lain awake all night at one time or another. You worried the whole night about something that was to take place the next day—a surgery or a difficult meeting. The next morning you threw off the covers and got up with sleepy eyes. The light hurt your eyes. Your head was heavy. You were filled with apprehension at what the day would bring. You felt like pulling the blankets up again.
Well, King David, the writer of Psalm 3, didn’t feel that way, even though he had every reason to. The psalm’s title tells us that David slept and woke as he did while he was fleeing from Absalom his son. Absalom had seized his father’s throne by entering the city of Jerusalem with a sizeable force. David was forced to flee with only a few faithful supporters. He didn’t know what would happen. Absalom’s forces could overtake him and his men before they could make it to the relative safety of the wilderness. Nevertheless, he writes that he lay down and slept peacefully and woke the following morning rested and ready to take on the new day.
Amazingly, David was able to sleep through the night! How was that possible with tension and trouble and uncertainty all around? It’s all because of that one key thought, “The LORD sustained me” (v. 5). David kept thinking: “The LORD will take care of me.”
It reminds us of David’s son, Jesus Christ. In spite of having to deal with the brokenness of life and enmity all day long, Jesus fell asleep in the stern of a boat during a great storm (Mark 4:37–39). His terrified disciples had to wake him up. But he stood and calmed the sea with a word. And then he said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Have you no faith?” If we embrace the Lord Jesus in faith, we come to realize time and again that we actually have no real cause to be terrified. David could already rest in his son. And we can also rest in him. He calms storms with a word. And because of his cross he will fell Satan with one little word.
So sleep peacefully with him in your heart. He will sustain you!
