PSALM 15:1-5 Approaching the Almighty

V. 1 “O LORD, who shall sojourn in your tent? Who shall dwell on your holy hill?”
Certain circumstances naturally fill us with caution and fear when facing obvious hazards. We instinctively keep a safe distance from a blazing fire, a sheer cliff, or a wild beast, and we would go out of our way to avoid an armed or aggressive individual who means harm. In all such situations, our natural inclination is to pull back and remain far away whenever possible.
However, there comes a time when coming face-to-face with ultimate authority cannot be avoided. At the conclusion of our earthly life, each person faces an unavoidable appointment with the Almighty. The continuous movement of time draws every individual closer to standing before the LORD, regardless of whether they recognized His existence during their lifetime. Are you prepared to stand before your Creator?
The prophet Isaiah was brought into the very throne room of the Lord in a vision. Confronted by the absolute holiness and majesty of God, he was acutely aware of his own guilt and cried out, “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts!” (Isa. 6:5). Isaiah was drawn into God’s presence beyond his own choice; in his sinful condition, he never would have dared to draw near on his own.
Even believers can experience unease or apprehension as the moment of appearing before God—whether at death or on the Day of Judgment—approaches. In line with the question of Psalm 15, one might ask, “Will I truly be welcomed on God’s holy mountain and remain in His presence? What will occur when I stand before Him?” Such concerns are understandable when we reflect on the supreme holiness and glory of the LORD, who is entirely without sin.
Coming near to the Almighty is a matter of profound weight. It is achievable through only one path: placing faith and reliance on the sinless Son of God, who came from the LORD's presence to pay the penalty for our transgressions. His sacrificial payment on the cross, combined with His flawless righteousness, grants believers everything required to stand before God with confidence. Those who belong to Christ can look forward to dwelling with Him, who currently lives and reigns in eternal glory.
