PSALM 16:1-6 A Beautiful Inheritance

V. 6 “The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.”
Imagine vast expanses of rolling fields covered with vibrant green grass on fertile land. Off in the distance stands a forest teeming with wildlife. Winding through it all is a clear, flowing stream where deer gather peacefully to drink. It is a breathtaking scene—a view worthy of a picture postcard.
Now imagine receiving all of this as a personal gift. A wealthy relative has passed away and bequeathed this estate to you as an inheritance—what an incredible joy! This captures the emotion David conveys in Psalm 16:5–6, though his heart is not set on physical land. By divine decree, each family in Israel was assigned a specific inheritance in the Promised Land, which they held dear. After centuries of bondage in Egypt and forty years of wandering in the desert, the Israelites deeply prized their assigned place in Canaan. It was their sanctuary and home.
While David undoubtedly appreciated his physical plot as much as anyone, his devotion to God was far greater. He recognized that the land was merely a gift, making the Giver incomparably more precious! What worth would any property hold without the LORD beside him? No matter how beautiful or prized the land might be, it meant nothing to him apart from the LORD Himself (v. 2).
Thus, David expresses a profound truth: LORD, you are my chosen portion and my inheritance. His perspective aligns with that of the Levites, who received no territorial land allotment because the LORD Himself and His service were their sole heritage (Deut. 18:2). This was David’s heart’s desire—to live in communion with God and serve Him faithfully every day into eternity was worth vastly more than any vast estate. The LORD was David’s true home and refuge.
In Christ Jesus, He becomes our ultimate refuge as well. Our own spiritual "boundary lines" have fallen in the most delightful places because God’s Son is our Lord and Savior. In Christ, we receive every true blessing: the pardon of our sins, the renewing and comforting strength of the Holy Spirit, and a secure eternal future alongside all His saints. We can constantly turn to Christ in prayer to receive grace and safety. Jesus remains with us always (Matt. 28:20)—our glorious inheritance to treasure today and for all eternity.
