PSALM 17:1-5 A Heart Test

V. 3 “You have tried my heart, you have visited me by night, you have tested me and you will find nothing.”
There are moments when Christians encounter hostility from others simply for their love for Christ—and people may attempt to harm us in various ways. David frequently faced false accusations for things he never did, and his very life was threatened on numerous occasions (1 Sam. 24). In those times of severe distress, David cried out to the Lord for rescue, just as he does in this psalm.
Surprisingly, one of David’s initial appeals is for God to examine him—his actions, his words, and even the depths of his heart. He asks the LORD to examine him at night, when he is entirely alone. Nighttime is often when our defenses are lowest, leaving us vulnerable and susceptible to intense temptation. Yet David confidently invites God’s inspection: LORD, examine me thoroughly, test my inner thoughts, and You will see that I am innocent of their false charges. You will find no wrongdoing!
Could we stand before God with such confidence? Can we make the same appeal David made? We can—if we strive to live with the same integrity. David is not claiming to be without sin, but rather that he possesses genuine integrity. He is innocent of the specific accusations brought by his enemies. He has faithfully sought to fulfill his covenant relationship with God, which includes acknowledging sin and seeking forgiveness. God’s covenant is anchored in His steadfast love, which David calls upon in verse 7. David has lived sincerely, striving to follow God's commands without hypocrisy.
Have we maintained that same sincerity? Are we truly grieved by our sins? Do we turn away from wrong and seek to walk in close fellowship with the Lord? These are crucial questions to resolve before asking God to deliver us from our enemies. Could current hardships be God’s loving discipline for unconfessed sin? Our Father calls us to a life completely devoted to Him. Hypocrisy is grievous to Him, so before we ask for His protection, our hearts must first stand the test.
To pass this test, we must find our refuge in Christ, who alone possesses a completely pure heart. Through His perfect obedience and sinless sacrifice, we receive His righteousness when we repent and trust in Him. As forgiven followers, we are then empowered by Christ’s Spirit to live in thankful obedience. That is true integrity. In Him, our hearts pass the test, and we can rest assured that our prayers for help are heard.
