PSALM 17:6–15 Apple of God’s Eye

READ: PSALM 17:6–15

V. 8 “Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings.

How much do you mean to God? How much does He care for you? Sometimes we wonder—especially when facing danger or distress, as David did. When the threat of being hurt feels close and real, doubts can creep in: Will the Lord help me? Is He listening to my cries? Why would He care about someone like me among millions in need?

David addressed these doubts by turning directly to Scripture. By looking at God's past actions and promises, David remembered how God had delivered His people from bondage in Egypt (v. 7). Through the plagues and the miracle of deliverance, God demonstrated His steadfast love and protection. Reflecting on this history, David realized just how deeply precious God’s people are to Him.

So precious, in fact, that God describes Israel as the “apple of His eye” (Deut. 32:10)—a phrase literally meaning “the little one of the eye,” referring to the pupil. When you stand close to someone and look directly into their eyes, you can see your own tiny reflection—a "little person" mirrored in their pupil. To be the "apple" or "little person" of someone's eye signifies intimacy, affection, and value; you only draw that close to those you cherish. And when someone is that precious to you, you will do whatever it takes to shield and protect them.

David reasoned that as a member of God's chosen people, he too was the “apple of His eye.” Thus he prayed with confidence: “Keep me as the apple of Your eye.” You can pray with that same assurance today. God’s love for His people is even more clearly revealed through the ultimate price paid for our redemption. In Egypt, a lamb was slain to shield Israel from the angel of death. At Golgotha, the Lamb of God was sacrificed to save us from eternal death.

Because of Jesus Christ, you are deeply valued by your heavenly Father—and He will surely shelter you in the shadow of His wings.
