PSALM 32:6-11 Divine Guidance

PSALM 32:6-11

V. 8 "I will counsel you with my eye upon you."

Throughout our life we have to make decisions. There are the everyday decisions, such as how to respond to an invitation, how to spend a free evening, etc. From time to time we have to make big decisions: about career, marriage, moving to a different city or even a different country. This can be quite challenging, especially the major decisions that involve stepping into the unknown.

One of the joys of the Christian life is that God promises to provide his people with guidance. This guidance comes in various ways. There is the general guidance that comes through Bible study and listening to the proclamation of the word during the worship service. There is also a kind of guidance that the Lord provides to each individual believer.

Psalm 32:8 is a beautiful testimony to this. "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you." These last words point to a personal and intimate guidance provided by the Lord. Christian believers may expect the Lord's loving eye to be upon them as they go through different stages in life. The same idea is found in Psalm 73:23-24, "You hold my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me in glory."

This guidance is enjoyed by "everyone who is godly," everyone who approaches the Lord in prayer (v. 6). In other words, these are the privileges of the people of God's covenant. Not only do they receive forgiveness of sins by God's free grace (vv. 1-2), they also receive God's guidance through all the various stages of their life.

In the new covenant this experience is enriched as God's people have a teacher and guide in the person of the Son of God, Jesus Christ. We have a personal connection with him through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. We follow him and imitate him (1 Cor. 11:1). He has promised to guide us, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me" (John 10:27), and he has assured us of his protection and guidance, "They will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand" (John 10:28). Therefore, "be glad in the LORD, and rejoice, O righteous!" (v. 11).
